Music in our school
Music and singing are an integral part of life, and we recognise this at Stanley Road Primary School. We provide a vibrant musical experience for all children with opportunities for all children to listen, sing, play, improvise, compose, perform and enjoy music. They will also develop skills, appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to begin to make judgements about the qualities of different music.
Through our music curriculum pupils will gain enjoyment, self-confidence and a sense of achievement through musical activities. They will acquire musical skills and understanding of musical concepts through a learning sequence that has regards to the principles of listening and focussing, exploring, investigating and practising, and performing.
Extra-curricular provision with our school choir and instrumental lessons enhance the curriculum on offer. Concerts and events take place to allow children to perform and observe live music.
At Stanley Road Primary School we deliver a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum through the Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC).
PKC is a scheme of work which offers a cyclical progression, where children will learn and retain more over time, as learning is well sequenced with a bespoke 2-year rolling cycle to meet the needs of all the children.
By using PKC as the basis of a scheme of work, we can ensure that children are fulfilling the aims for musical learning stated in the National Curriculum, in a way that is diverse, knowledge-rich, and encourages development of cultural capital.
THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC
Music Overview
By the time they leave Stanley Road, children will play a number of instruments through a range of whole class, group and individual activities.
They will have opportunities to explore sounds, listen actively, compose and perform. Through weekly musical activities, children will be given opportunities to learn music specific vocabulary in a meaningful context.
In Early Years, our children regularly sing songs throughout the day and our children have focussed whole class music sessions using different instrument types such as percussion. Children also have access, both inside and outdoors, to different resources to create and perform their own compositions.
